This morning, Governor Ralph Northam, representatives of Amazon, and local leaders met at the Oxbow Center to introduce the tech giant to Southwest Virginia and discuss plans to create jobs and economic opportunity throughout the region.
In late 2018, Amazon announced that they had selected Arlington, Virginia for its second headquarters.
UVA Wise Chancellor Donna P. Henry, the region’s legislative delegation and others offered insight into the Southwest Virginia's talent, technology, and workforce. Henry said UVA Wise looks forward to finding ways to support Amazon’s growth across all of Virginia.
“Your decision to locate in Virginia was celebrated across the entire Commonwealth, including here in Southwest Virginia,” Henry said.
“We have many IT professionals in this region working remotely for companies across the globe. We also have thousands of students within a 125-mile radius of this exact location who are studying in information technology fields. Many want to stay in the region and take advantage of the amenities Southwest Virginia has to offer.”
The Oxbow Center provides technologists and entrepreneurs with the resources they need to develop and thrive, including high-power broadband, office amenities, programming and education, and access to an expansive professional network.
